The Yankees have too many championships in the past to truly be miserable anytime soon. 27 World Series wins is more than double the total of the St. Louis Cardinals, who have the second most at 11, and that’s also more than 19 teams combined have. That said, they haven’t won in 15 years, so let’s break it down.
The last World Series won by the Yankees was in 2009, so a 15 season drought. (+15)
Their last World Series they played in was last season however, so there is no drought in that regard. (+0)
Obviously, having played in the 2024 World Series, they have no playoff drought either. (+0)
During their title drought, 10 separate teams have won the World Series, 4 of which play in the American League, but only one plays in the AL East with the Yankees, and that is the Boston Red Sox, who won twice in that period, in 2013, and 2018. (+2)
Nevertheless, their 27 World Series titles cast a long shadow still. (-27)
Misery Index -10
Add all that together, and they have a -10 misery index, a score that doesn’t really reflect the weight of expectation that a tradition of winning and an enormous media market can bring.
Join me next time as we look at the NFL team with the lowest misery index, and defending Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles.
