The Cleveland Browns are a long suffering franchise that is one of 4 teams to have never played in a Super Bowl. They do have 4 AAFC Championships before joining the NFL in 1950, where they proceeded to win 4 more NFL Championships in the pre-Super Bowl era. They were so dominant that they won 5 Championships in their first 5 years of competition, including all 4 AAFC Championships before the league merger. Unfortunately, they haven’t won anything since 1964. To make matters worse, in 1996 they lost their entire organization when they moved to Baltimore to become the Ravens, who have won 2 Super Bowls since then. The pain of that more than qualifies them for a x2 multiplier. They were awarded an expansion team in 1999 though, whose level of competitiveness, or lack thereof, has led fans to nickname their stadium the “Factory of Sadness”.
They have no Super Bowl wins, but they last won the NFL Championship in 1964 (+60)
Having never played in the Super Bowl, their last NFL Championship game they played was in 1965 (+59)
They had an 18 year playoff drought that was snapped in 2020, and since then, they last made the playoffs in 2023 (+1)
Since they last won a title, they moved to the AFC in 1970 after the AFL merger, playing in the AFC Central until relocating to Baltimore. Their subsequent expansion franchise has played in the AFC North since the realignment in 2002. During that time they had 2 divisional rivals combine to win 8 Super Bowls between the Ravens winning twice, and the Pittsburgh Steelers who won six times. (+8)
drought total=128
Starting play in 1946, so with 8 wins across 78 seasons, their expected win rate is 60(8/78)=6.154×128=787.692
drought x win rate=787.692
Year over year improvement is rough, they were in the playoffs in 2023, and only won 3 games in 2024, so 1-(.176-.647)=1.471
year over year x previous rate=1,158.695
Franchise relocation multiplier x2
Misery Index=2,317.391
That is painful, but is amplified tremendously by their 2 decades of dominance in the pre Super Bowl era. Tomorrow we will move on to the New Jersey Devils.
